Some Things You Only Understand From Far Away

In Indian homes, silver arrives before you are old enough to ask for it. A thin payal on a baby's ankle. A coin pressed into your palm at Diwali. Gold goes into a locker at the bank; silver stays out where life is actually happening — worn to school, to work, to weddings, to the kitchen on an ordinary Wednesday.

Komal grew up in Mumbai with all of it, and never once thought about it. Nobody does.

Then she moved to Canada for work, and thinking about it was most of what she did.

You cannot carry a city with you. What you carry is much smaller than that. In her case it was a handful of silver — the pieces she had worn so long she had stopped seeing them. On the days when home felt very far away, those were what she reached for. Not for how they looked. For who had given them, and when, and what the room had sounded like that day.

That is the thing about silver in an Indian family. It is never only jewellery. It is somebody's hand on your ankle when you were too small to remember it. It is the one thing that comes back out of the cupboard every single festival, a little softer each year, and goes back in holding one more memory than it did before.

Eventually her pieces wore thin, the way silver does. And when she went to replace them, she found that she could not. Not there, where it was sold as something exotic at a price that had nothing to do with the metal. And not back home online either, where the word had quietly stopped meaning very much at all.

It bothered her more than it should have. She was settled by then — a career, a life, the version of the story a family can tell comfortably at dinner. And she could not stop thinking about a metal.

So in 2025 she came home. At an age when women here are told, gently and constantly, that it is late to begin something. She began.

Ayanta is what she began. Not a company built to sell things, but an answer to a question she had carried for years: why is the metal that holds all of our smallest memories the one nobody bothers to make honestly?

Everything else on this page exists to serve that one question. She would rather you did not have to think about any of it. She would rather you simply put it on, and forget it is there — and then one day, a long way from home, reach for it.
